Why the Dutch are the way they are ～何が「オランダ流」なのか～
3月31日（水）大使講演会シリーズ第17弾としてフィリップ・ドゥ・ヘーア駐日オランダ大使にご講演いただきました。オランダは九州ほどの大きさですが、その国土の4分の１は堤防で守られた海面下であること、現在は「王国」ですが、17世紀に7つの州からなる「連邦共和国」が誕生したように古くから’committee’による運営がなされてきたこと、交易を中心とした日蘭の深い歴史、そして現在のオランダで中絶や安楽死が合法化されている背景・考え方など、幅広く充実したお話を伺いました。沢山の画像もご紹介くださりながら気さくなヘーア大使の見事なプレゼンテーションに満席の会場もすっかり引き込まれました。中でも徳川幕府から授かった朱印状の画像は大変興味深く、皆で読み下しに挑戦するなど、とてもためになる楽しい時間でした。
Dr. Philip De Heer, the Dutch Ambassador to Japan gave our 17th Ambassador’s Lecture at the Japan National Press Center, describing how the necessity to maintain the dikes against the sea had led to rule by committee and tolerance in many areas of Dutch life and how literacy had lead to individualism. He concluded by describing many wonderful places to visit in his country, several of which are not far from the capital city Amsterdam. After the talk, several of us went for a beer and yakitori in a lower ground floor restaurant.
